Why Buy Plastic?
A plastic knife block sounds cheap. Why would I want that? Please understant
that plastic knife blocks can be cheaply made or very well made (like
Corian). There are three main reasons why people choose plastic knife
blocks.
Hygienic
Wood naturally absorbs odors and bacteria through microscopic pores. Plastic
products do not have pores and retain less bacteria. Plastic knife blocks
can be submerged in water for cleaning. Wooden knife blocks can be cleaned
in water, but you should avoid getting to much water on them. Wood has
a tendency to shrink and expand after being exposed to water. Wood movement
slowly breaks down the wood product.
Match Decor
If you want a bright red retro knife block, wood can meet your needs.
Plastic allows for a wider variety of style; both in color and design.
Durability
A cheap plastic knife block will not last long at all. However, a well
made block of Corian will outlast any wood product. We prefer a low grade
wood block to a cheap plastic product.
